Do I approve the drawing before you cut?
Yes, and you are covered by our 100% money-back guarantee at every step. An artist hand-draws your photo and emails you a proof. Revisions are unlimited. Nothing is cut until you approve, and if you stop before that you get a full refund with no fee.
How many people fit in one portrait?
It depends on the size: 1 to 2 people or pets at 8 x 10, up to 4 at 12 x 16, up to 8 at 16 x 20 and up to 10 at 18 x 24 inches. More figures need more room for detail. Every size comes framed or unframed, with a walnut or black background.
What if I change my mind?
Before you approve the drawing you can cancel at any point for a full refund, with no fee. Revisions are unlimited and free, so most people refine the drawing rather than cancel. The details are in our full refund policy.

Size and details
Steel: 16 gauge laser cut steel, about 1/16 in thick, with a hard silver powder coat.
Frame: walnut or black. Four magnets hold the steel off the frame, so it floats and casts a shadow.
No-frame option: the same steel, held off a walnut or black backer by the magnets.
Hanging: one screw. The screw and the magnetic spacers that lift the piece off the wall are in the box.
Sizes: 8 x 10, 12 x 16, 16 x 20 or 18 x 24 in. The orientation, landscape or portrait, follows the photo you upload. Our artists may adjust the layout slightly to present it best.

Can it be made from an old or low-quality photo?
Usually, yes. Send the clearest photo you have, or a few, and your artist will work from the best one. You see the proof before anything is cut and can ask for changes until it looks like them. You can also email extra photos to support@storyinsteel.com after ordering.
Can you put two people from different photos together?
Yes. Turn on "Combine multiple photos" and upload a photo of each person. Your artist places them together in one portrait.
What is a laser cut steel portrait, and how is it different from a print?
It is a physical piece of art, not a print. An artist hand draws your photo as solid shapes and open space, and that drawing is laser cut from 16 gauge steel, about 1/16 inch thick, and powder coated silver. Magnets hold the steel just off the walnut or black backing, so it floats and casts real shadows that change with the light. A print is a photo in ink on paper or canvas, flat behind glass. This is your photo redrawn and cut in steel, with real depth and shadow.
How does it hang?
One screw is all it takes, and it is in the box. The steel attaches to the frame by itself: magnets on the frame hold it in place, just off the backing, so it floats.
